What the Subsidy Money Was Spent On

The agriculture sector received over MDL 2 billion in 2014, of which MDL 544 million went to subsidies. After last week we published an infographic showing who received the subsidy money, today's infographic answers the question of what the subsidies were allocated for. *In the first quadrant, the real value refers to the level adjusted for inflation from 2000 Thus, most subsidies went to the purchase of agricultural machinery and equipment – MDL 117.9 million, stimulating investment in the establishment of multiannual plantations – MDL 51.43 million, the construction and reconstruction of greenhouses, solariums and tunnels – MDL 50.9 million, and the modernisation and re-equipping of livestock farms – MDL 47.4 million. Subsidies were also allocated for the insurance of agricultural land and animals – MDL 29.3 million, access to credit (subsidised instalments) – MDL 15.8 million, the establishment of vineyard areas – MDL 8.0 million, and the provision of anti-frost systems and anti-hail installations – MDL 3 million – incidentally a small amount compared with other subsidy categories, considering the effectiveness of such systems.
