Although it allocates sums comparable to those of countries in the region to fund the police, the Republic of Moldova continues to lag behind at the global level in the effectiveness of its security and public order system. With a budget of approximately 1.2-1.4% of GDP, the Moldovan police rank 78th out of 127 countries in the world in the Global Internal Security and Policing Index, even though since 2010 it has launched a vast process of organisational and institutional reform, which has led to a series of improvements in the efficiency and transparency of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
