How much do we spend on national hospitals?

In 2015, the Government of the Republic of Moldova spent MDL 5.3 billion on healthcare. Most of this money was allocated to public specialised institutions – at national, district and municipal level, and to the Family Doctors' Centres. Thus, Expert-Grup, through Budgetstories.md, will publish three infographics describing how much money was spent in medical institutions at all levels, what these institutions are, and what this money is spent on. We should note that, as a result of reforms in the sector, some institutions were reorganised and subordinated. The first infographic in this series describes what the revenues of national hospitals (and of medical institutions founded by the Ministry of Health) consist of, what this money is spent on, and, to the extent that data are available, what results were achieved in 2010-2016. Thus, the most “expensive” hospitals are the Republican Clinical Hospital (RCH), the Oncology Institute and the Mother and Child Institute, whose annual budgets exceed MDL 120 million, and in the case of the RCH, MDL 390 million annually. These institutions also have the highest cost per treated case, probably because of the complexity of the cases treated. In addition, on average about 1.25 million patients visited these institutions annually (between 2010 and 2016), either for a specialist consultation or for treatment, but fewer than 15% of visits were made to prevent possible illnesses. Data from the National Centre for Health Management show that the number of visits to the Oncology Institute grows on average by 2 thousand patients per year, and the incidence of cancer cases also grows by over 300 cases annually. The average length of stay of a patient in national hospitals is 13 days. The second infographic describes how money is spent in the country's district hospitals.
