External grants: how much does Moldova receive compared with countries in the region?

The size of the external assistance provided to the Republic of Moldova is a subject of great interest, but it is also speculated upon, both in the press and by political decision-makers. What is the volume of external assistance provided to the Republic of Moldova in the public sector, who are the main donors and which sectors are financed as a priority? Do we receive more or less money than other European countries (European countries that are not members of the EU)? These are the questions we will try to answer in a series of 3 infographics on the external assistance provided to our country. The first topic in this series describes the position of the RM relative to other countries in terms of grants provided in 2010-2012. A grant is a form of optional non-reimbursable financing received by the government of a country from other governments or from international organisations for carrying out actions that are important for certain segments of society or for economic and social development. Grants supplement the revenues of the local authorities obtained from their own resources. They may be received in cash or in kind. The infographic describes the volume of grants per capita provided by foreign partners and included in national budgets. Thus, over the past three years we received on average EUR 30 per capita, less than Albania, Armenia or Georgia, but considerably more than Ukraine or Russia. For interested parties, we have published the datasets so that the analysis can continue. This is only a beginning for discussions on the external assistance provided to the Republic of Moldova.
